Less racist version of Fawlty Towers

Fawlty Towers: it wasn't John Cleese's goostepping that worried the censors. Photograph: BBC

The BBC has aired an edited version of the Fawlty Towers episode “the Germans” they have cut a line from the episode. While a previous time it was “the war”that was the problem now it was a line spoken by Major Gowen about Indians and mentioned the word “niggers”.
Although some people argue that times have changed and the remark would cause greater offence now. Other say accuse the BBC of “airbrushing history” and that the entire point of the joke is making the Major’s racism the butt of the joke.

My opinion:
I believe that people should understand that these older yet still popular tv shows are made in a different time and with a different mindset than we have nowadays. Which means there can be things said and shown that would be alright back then but not now, if you cut them out you violate the premise and intention of the show. It would be like removing all the twin towers images or mentions out of all shows/movies made before 9/11, it would be weird and completely unnecessary.

  1. I have no idea what this is about since I do not know the Fawlty Towers. I do think that like you said the mindset is a lot different now than it was back then. The Germans and the Twin Towers are a part of the history and that is why we cannot just ignore them.
